Choose your next step

What should you do next?

Not sure if you need service now or can wait? Use these signs to choose a practical next step. Talking through what your system is doing does not commit you to an appointment.

See smoke, flames or signs of a fire? Leave the building, stay out and call 911. If there is no fire and it is safe to use the controls, switch the system off and call SquareHVAC.

Emergency service is available 24/7, including Sundays.

Quick checks before you call

  • Check the thermostat: is it set to heat or cool, and is the set point where you expect?
  • Check the filter: a clogged filter limits airflow. Replace it if it is visibly dirty.
  • Check the power: look at the breaker and the equipment switch near the unit.
  • Check the airflow: hold a hand at a supply register and feel whether air is moving.

Signs to call us about

Signs a geothermal system needs attention

  • Heating or cooling weaker than usual
  • The loop circulation pump running constantly
  • Higher electricity use without a change in settings
  • Error codes or warning lights on the indoor unit

A geothermal (ground-source) heat pump heats and cools a home by exchanging heat with the ground, where the temperature stays steady through the year. SquareHVAC is based in Hillside and serves communities within approximately 30 road miles. We install and service geothermal systems.

What a geothermal system is

Because the ground stays cooler than the air in summer and warmer than the air in winter, the heat pump works against a smaller temperature difference than an air-source system does. The same system provides heating in winter, cooling in summer, and can assist with domestic hot water.

A geothermal system is a larger project than replacing a furnace or an air conditioner. If the yard, the budget or the timeline does not fit, an air-source heat pump or a conventional system may be the better answer. We look at the property and tell you plainly.

Geothermal service and repair

We service existing geothermal systems: the heat-pump equipment, the loop circulation, the controls and the distribution.

What the cost depends on

A geothermal installation depends on the loop type, the yard, the drilling depth, the home’s load and the equipment chosen. Our guide on what HVAC repair costs and what drives the price explains how we think about cost factors generally.

The written quote

We explain what we found and what it costs, in writing, with parts and labor listed separately. You review it; you decide. Work only begins once you approve.

All services

When geothermal is a good choice

  • A new home or a full system replacement, when the yard is accessible

  • A home with high year-round heating and cooling use

  • A property where an outdoor condenser unit is unwanted or impractical

  • A homeowner planning to stay in the home long enough for the loop to be part of the property

What an installation involves

  1. Step 1

    We assess the property.

The home's heating and cooling load, the yard, the soil and access for the drilling or trenching equipment.

  2. Step 2

    We explain the options.

Horizontal loops need more yard; vertical loops need less surface area but deeper drilling. We recommend the loop type and equipment that fit.

  3. Step 3

    You get a written quote.

We assess the system, explain what we found and provide a written quote for approval before work begins, with parts and labor listed separately.

  4. Step 4

    The installation.

The loop goes in first, then the indoor heat pump, then the connection to the distribution system.

  5. Step 5

    Start-up and walkthrough.

We start the system, verify heating and cooling, and show you the thermostat and the controls.

Common questions about geothermal heating and cooling

How long does a geothermal installation take?
The loop installation and the indoor work are usually the longest parts, and the schedule depends on the yard, the drilling or trenching and the equipment. We tell you the expected timeline with the written quote before work begins.
Which brands do you install?
We install and service equipment of all major brands. What we recommend depends on the property, the yard and the heating and cooling load.
Can I call outside routine hours?
Yes. Emergency service is available 24/7, including Sundays. Non-emergency visits outside routine service hours are scheduled for the next working period.
